In a new wave of motion, thousands of gamers are saying they feel ‘cheated’ after they paid their R500 for Aliens Colonial Marines. The games demo, premiering at E3 along with some pieces of gameplay and a multiplayer death-match rig, showed off a beautiful polished finish, bragging about next level dynamic lighting (key to any Aliens game) along with stunning AI and beautiful graphics. The finished product? Not so similar.
Aliens Colonial Marines has been panned with almost universally negative reviews, many citing the graphics as one of the big, if not the biggest issue, along with the brain-dead AI and unfinished multiplayer. Many gamers believe they have the right to feel cheated and they deserve a refund on their game. Gearbox has yet to comment on their game, but many people are attacking them through emails and complaints.
In a recent statement, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, the developers, said that “I did not lie, at E3 I showed off the game that was in development” he also went on to say that development was rerouted through many other smaller developers, leaving the game in the pieces that it is at the moment.

I think gamers these days are spoilt… myself included in that statement… If a game is fun and I enjoy playing it then I’m going to play it. As with everything in life you can scrutinise the bad or enjoy the good. I chose to enjoy the good ?
I feel that there is too much negativity around games these days. When It used to take 30mins to load a game of floppies you didn’t care if the lighting effects where great… you just enjoyed the game even if it was crap. I agree with James…. we forget how much time it takes to create these worlds, creatures and the blood and tears that gets put into a game.
I dont think its a very polished game… rather take the time and make the game well… spend the extra time and then fans and gamers will applaud you for it. Rush it and this is what happens.
The thing is, regardless of whether the selling point of a game is graphics or storyline, no company should market a game on false promises – not only because it’s immoral (Especially with the blatant difference seen in Aliens: Colonial Marines), but because they’re gonna have a hard time digging themselves out of that rut and people will be less likely to trust their pre-release trailers and footage.
By writing this article I’m not on any side, I personally did not enjoy the game, but neither was I around when those old arcade games were.
I do think it’s wrong for Gearbox (a very well known and out there developer) to show off such a beautiful game with next gen features and then deliver something much worse, the level featured in the demo was not even in the actual game. So yeah I do believe people have a right to ask for a refund. However I know that that will never happen, so let them complain about it
maybe they’ll get a discount on the next borderlands or something.
